Born-Free 5 update

We've been working hard to get rolling this year with the poster and tickets for the bike giveaway at Born-Free 5. We have another amazing piece of art from Adam Nickle that shows how up in the air the choices are this year since you will be able to pick ONE of EIGHTEEN custom built motorcycles from the invited builders at Born-Free 5! That's right, you can pick the bike you like most out of the 18 involved and it could be a Triumph, Sportster, Shovelhead, Panhead, or a Knucklehead! Your wildest dreams could come true!

Anyway, the posters and tickets are going to print this week, so stay tuned to the Born-Free blog for all the details and don't wait once they hit!

Awesome UL

My friend Chase sent me this picture of his grandpa's UL taken somewhere between '46-50. What an amazing bike! In a VL chassis, little rear fender, Flanders bars and risers, chrome frontend and wheels, and the early MCM type fishtails... Original cool!

My '37 UL

Ive been on an off building this '37 UL for a year and a half to two years now maybe. I bought a own up motor and a roller off craigslist in the San Fernando valley from a nice guy named Brian that had some unfortunate things happen in his quest to get it on the road.
My vision started with selling everything except the motor and knuckle frame with a pan neck. I took the blown up motor to Smokey, I built an early Trans, fixed a bunch of stuff on the frame, and started learning about and collecting '37 parts. Fast forward and you have this-and almost done mutt of an early bike. Was hoping to fire it up today, but alas... Gotta get home and hang out with the little woman an Clyde.
Soon. Gotta have it broke in to ride to the Love Cycles party in march...

Iridescence

So back in the 60's Joe Alphabet built this crazy panhead chopper in a ridiculously molded frame. It was featured in a '67 Cycle Guide by Tom McMullen and the story ended with it being bought by an austrailian surfer and gone down under. Well flash forward 6 or so years and it's on the cover of street chopper like it was a fresh build by a whole new shop-what gives? Anyway holy shit this frame resurfaces in Japan at our friend Duas Caras shop. I had the Indian scout girder, we made a deal and then low and behold there it is in japan with a Stroker Knucklehead in it, and who is doing hot laps? This guy! Ron at Duas caras was not only generous enough to let me take this two wheeled earthquake around the show, but let me take off on the streets of Nagaoya with it when we visited his shop. What a treat- highlight of 2013 for sure, never did I think this would happen when I first saw that article 12 years ago!

Happy 2nd day of 2013

rock and roll...

Back when i actually used to go out and stay up late to watch rock and roll shows i also used to shoot many of them... this was Indian Jewelry back in May of 2008  in the only good bar in Knoxville, TN called the Pilot Light. I had seen them open for someone at Spaceland in LA a year or two before and was just kinda whatever about them at the time, but the show in Knoxville was captivating.

I had to go to Knoxville every year for work and came back to this place every night i was there on each trip. Even made a few friends. Bought a 1972 Fender Musicmaster Bass from this guy Will Fist after he played his set which was one 20-minute song. It was actually good, very Spacemen 3 before everyone and their mother referenced Spacemen 3 to be cool.  I asked him about the bass the year before and he remembered and asked me a year later if i still wanted it. Guess he needed money. Paid him the $175 asking price.

I should get out more these days.

Japan 2012...1710 pictures

I only took 1710 pictures this year in Japan for our trip to the Mooneyes Hot Rod & Custom Show. I'll try and start going through them... We had another amazing time there. We saw all our old friends and keep meeting great new ones. I would saw the show was even better than the 3 previous years i have attended, the bar is perpetually raised by all the builders over there, hats off to you. And hats off to Shige and the whole Moon staff for doing what they do and all the work that goes into pulling off a show this size! I kinda have a clue as what it takes... Mike's Preunit looked amazing as did the rest of the guests bikes. Many of them are our Born-Free 4 builders and award winners which was cool to see it taking them places.

Thanks again to everyone that hung out, took us around, let us into your shop or home! We love you. Now i'm more jazzed than ever to get my '37 UL done!!!

It's Grants Birthday!

Happy birthday Mr. Bandit

New Shirt, New Project

So back in August I acquired this 1941 porkchop express. Original plan was on the cycle-delic side, but as most plans go... The new direction is definitely hinged at the birth of the atomic age-the glorious post war days of the custom motorcycle. Still a long way to go, with a short time to get there. Anyway Grant had a great idea for a new shirt and I put pen to paper, incorporating this project and voila, our new pocket tee.
