Hot Rod Custom Show 2015

After 7 years of attending the HRCS, it doesnt get old, it just gets better!!!  It is great to see all my friends going with their Born-Free bikes!  Can't wait, but it'll be here before you know it!!!!!!!!!!!

tanks alot

Ok Folks, here is the deal:

There are 100 of these 18x24" posters that will be rolled up in 100 individual tubes.

This poster is of Chris Broders 1949 Chevy Kustom, built by Circle City Hot Rods and painted by yours truly.

The talented Mark Kawakami took all of the sweet pictures.

 

 

In one of these tubes a "golden ticket" will be placed and the whole batched mixed up before any address label is attached. All tubes will be mailed out simultaneously on the same day via USPS priority mail.

 

What does the golden ticket get you? It gets you this Lowbrow Customs Peanut Tank and Ribbed Fender that I have painted with a tangerine "pebbeled" Murano Pearl base and a modern type yellow pearl kabuki scallop design.

 

This is a brand new tank and fender folks, with a brand new paintjob!

(and if you don't like the paintjob, and sandblast it, I wont be offended, this is still a hell of a deal for a brand new tank and fender!)

But wait there's more, "a sorry bud, nice try" voucher will be placed in one more tube that will be good for a t-shirt and one of our "hood-lite" cast aluminum license plate and tail-light bracket.

Blue Christmas Miracle

Here is my winter break project.  The Car Craft magazine 1971 Dodge Demon.  Lots of fab-work by Grant and Circle City hot rods.  Twin turbo new hemi, back halved and caged!  Kandy Blue Lace and Freak Dots!

Greasy Kulture Magazine #35

35 issues ago Greasy Kulture was just a website.  A really cool website that was one of the few links to the modern movement of vintage choppers.  I would check for updates all of the time, wanting, one day to have a chopper as cool as the ones on there.  And now, Guy Bolton, the man behind the magazine has given me the great honor of the magazine cover!  I'm incredibly stoked and had no idea that this was his plan.  My little pile of parts and me.  I was happy enough, and surprised that he wanted a feature!  When I got back from Brooklyn this weekend, I didnt feel home sweet home until I saw my panhead at the Lodge.  I'll always love my bike.  Its a dream come true, and a dream that couldnt happen without friends like Alonzo, Grant and Dom, thats for sure.  just need to fix it now!  Great pictures by a great dude, Mark Kawakami at JoyRidesArtCo

Lime Time

Todd Asin from Small City Cycles, just to the left of Bakersfield in Idaho, is building this sweet and sour pre-unit for the Born Free 5 builders invitational build-off and it is one of the bikes you can pick if you got the winning ticket, but you can't win if you don't play! I've got her in the spray booth right now and this is one hell of a color!

Chopper Lingerie

Wrapped this up the other week for our main man Alan Stedman-número UNO color separator and illustrator at icon screening, for his '78 triumph. Faded Gold metallic with inverted lace flames complemented with fishscaled panels and purple pinstripes. Hopefully we get to see the bike at Born Free!!!!

the Split Dimension

When I was visiting Larry Watson in the hospital, naturally we talked about paint. In the course of our talk, Larry punched me in the brain. Before I left he asked me "so when are you going to paint the "Split Dimension"? My brain was punched so naturally I had no answer but only questions. The Leader described it as one paint-job splitting to reveal another.

OK what?

So that is what i tried to intrepret here on this tank I painted for the Oil & Water show earlier this month. The flames split two identical panel layouts that are different in their own dimesion.

Sign painting summer

Amongst teaching summer school, painting choppers, cycle lodge shenanigans and FMA, I managed to get some sign painting done



First I start with a template I draw up, usually from a small sketch that I blow up. I try to tailor each sign to the shop if artwork is not provided, and if it is I do my best to embellish the flavor.



Whenever I leaf a sign I've found that the best results come from painting inside the window(this won't work well with a tint) plus then I can tape up my template from outside and use it as a guide for painting my reverse design.



After i paint my black outline i will apply the leaf. The results are smooth on the outside and are protected from the elements. In this sign I utilized 4 types of leaf to add a dramatic olde tyme style.



-more often than not I will just blackout the background, sometimes the reverse of the leafing is none too pretty and/or is delicate and full of cracks. A gold paint will work very well to fill in these cracks. However this was not the case with Sid's sign as I was able to paint a reverse outline over the leaf to form another complete sign.

Sid and all the guys at the shop are a complete group of characters and I always enjoy the time I spend at the shop.

And this is where I learned how to tattoo! 7th street tattoo is directly off the main vein of the pulsating heart that is St. Paul Minnesota. Pete Mason has been running this shop about as long as I've been teaching school except I don't have the fifty dollar $30 name days.




Pete is a great friend and recipient of my first tattoo so are all the guys out there and our friendship is all thanks to Born-Free as you may have seen in some posts below. Back when Jeff and I (yo Layton) were out there Pete and I discussed that if I was ever out here again his vinyl would have to go.

The original vinyl lettering had a really cool "boogie" type face so I used that as my template.



Even without the leaf the white outline with black drop shadow looked 3kabillion times better. Vinyl signs have there place sure and have spawned an entire industry while making anyone with a plotter and the ability to type a signmaker, but the proof is in the pudding true believers.

The leaf comes in square sheets as you can see and only sticks to where the size is painted on. The excess gets cleaned up an what you see below is the finished sign

Earlier this year our pal Jon Tubbs from Alabama opened up a shop for men who like clothes that fit in long beach. We'd been talking about a window sign forever and talk is talk without action so here it is in gold and silver leafed glory
