My friend Gregg put this '48 80" together before anyone else that I hung around with. It's a real goer too, he's got thousands of miles on it and is one of the few bikes to pull off running a 21" wheel front and rear. You might remember it was on the cover over the horse and I think even beat out cole foster at the GNRS.

I think Grant is so spunout in the land of flats and pans that he has overlooked one of the ULTIMATE CHOPPERS of all time, I dare anyone to deny it. This hit the cover of Big Bike in 1970 and featured a lot of D&D products. I sure hope Frank and Rich can chime in on this one. Not your typical 1970 build but probably started way before Easy Rider hit the silver screen.

At the Cycle Lodge we were recently talking about what he'd do with his panhead motor project. Now methinks he should can the pan and get Far Out with a Flathead. What do you think True Believers???

Today is a monumental day...i am about to start working on my '68 Ford F-100 again! I started this baby probably a good 5 years ago while i was working on Classic Trucks Magazine...did TONS of work to it already...Lots of chassis work getting the former twin I-beam truck to sit right on coil overs (never been a fan of air even though stuff looks great slammed. I worked with Ford Racing and put in the first Ford 3-valve Modular V8 into a non-stock application, it had an '08 4.6L V8 now with a Ford Racing/Whipple big boost blower kit (adapted from an '08 Mustang), plus a beefed up T-45R Tremec, 9" posi/3.55:1 gears, etc. First set of American Racing Magnum 500-style (AR500)wheels, 18" redlines, i snuck AC in the truck, but rearranged the dash so it looks natural and hid the lines coming from the compressor, bent, cut, and welded up custom aluminum hardlines off the condenser...trick fuel Aeromotive system all in 1/2" stainless hardline, fully tig welded mandrel bent stainless exhaust system, etc...yeah, lots of work. I gotta get it done in 2012!

A couple years back when I was down visting the 'Pooner and Grant for Born Free, I had the opportunity to spend a little time w/ Dave Polgreen, Gator, Zack, Pete and some other guys from the middle of the country. What a great opportunity. I flew in and out within a 48 hour time-frame, slept for three hours and obviously didn't have a bike along with me, but I had an awful lot of fun just chatting with guys who are into choppers. I had more fun talking to them about not-chopper stuff, however.

Meeting Zack was good. We all like to think we've done some things in life and experienced the crazier side of it all, but this guy really has. Some of it involved crashing and burning, but from what I could tell, the dude paid attention along the way and learned a lot. Always neat to see someone bounce off the bottom and come out all the better for it. It was also fun to chase him around on his bike in the rental car. Much garbage gets talked about the Southern California guys, but to ride a motorcycle down there...woah! Traffic was nutso, moving at 80+, and Zack, Gator, Pete and a number of others non-Southern California natives navigated it with ease. A pretty neat thing to watch and one I'd like to experience sooner than later.

For almost 6 years i worked for Classic Trucks Magazine. It was a natural since i have always owned old trucks. My very first vehicle purchase when i was 16 was a 1950 Chevy truck. Here is some of my photo work from my time there. Most all were shot on locations near Goodguys shows across the country after a long hot day at the show.
I still need to finish my '68 F-100 i've been working on for quite some time...

The machine that Grant posted below made me think about this song a little. The bike is built with a bunch of good old parts, much as the song is, but those parts are used differently than they would have been prior to today, and the end result is something good.

And yes, I know that cover songs, tributes, etc. are generally terrible - especially when tied to the man in black - but this one has something going for it.

After poking around a little online yesterday and seeing that lots of people had decent things to say about the Dave Mann show I though maybe I was a little hard on it, but around 11pm last night laying in bed i realized it was because i had been in Japan at the Mooneyes show about a week ago and saw all kinds of thought provoking builds and the people behind them.
"Good" is of course a relative term, but it reaffirmed yet another GREAT trip to the Far East and how nice it is to be inspired.

It seemed like the Mann show was packed with unridden show bikes which seems like the farthest thing from Dave Mann himself and what his art represents. I think i would rather see neat bikes with fuel stains and oil splatter from the ride to Ventura than the same old (and new) trailer queens. I'll get off my high horse now, but first here's a picture of AG's swift Shovel as the whole Vice Crew were about to ride 8 hours back to Nagoya from Yokohama...

Saturday was a good day to get back into it, cleaning the shop and my shovelhead. Rode down to the Street Chopper party with Mike on his Superglide Boattail.
Looks like i was the last on a bike to leave Gabe's new Bar HookUp, had to turn in early to get up to ride to Ventura for the Dave Mann show.

Rode up with my good friend and all around nice guy Dave "Golden hands" Polgreen from St Paul. He rode Jeff Leighton's FXR and we braved the cold for a nice ride north.
Got to the show, rolled my bike in and paid $40 to put it in still a little fuzzy from the ride, pushed it to the last remaining row and then thought to myself "what did i just do???"
$40 to put it into an always ho-hum show??? Don't get me wrong, it was a nice day spent with friends, but the show is small and littered with some ugly bikes....oh well.
Polgreen and i split around 1 with the sun shining and jammed back to Long Beach. Good times.

So the guys at Hot Rod Magazine decided to buy a $1300 1968 Ranchero and replicate one the magazine had back in the day so they could drive from LA to Alaska and go ice racing then to Mexico in a few months...
the car came into the shop a few days ago and they are leaving sunday...it's about 25 degrees below zero up there right now!
We just put the new motor and trans in...added lots of driving lights and plenty of heated accessories...sorry about Brandon's butt crack.

A few minutes ago, on the eve of my 32 birthday, my brother calls to tell me our best friend growing up was just in an accident in Salt Lake City where we all grew up and is not expected to make it. They are holding him on life support until his older brother can fly in from Hawaii to say goodbye....
Dave Kenny is/was someone who always loved life and everyone in it, ever since we were little. He lived for those around him and especially his family and leaves behind a wife and 2 kids...i can't even image what this is like for a family to go through. I don't have too many memories from 5 to 18 without Dave...

I've always tried to cram as much stuff into life as i possibly can which i Hope is a good thing. Sometimes things get brushed aside and things forgotten in the terrific chaos that is my life. I have no regrets in life to date except stopping playing music for almost a decade from my late teens to mid twenties. I have done tons of dumb, exciting, crazy, far out, questionable, life changing (both good & bad) things so far in my time here on earth and i am better for them. Lived many places across the USA and done a fair amount of traveling here and abroad now.
Through working hard my whole life with no school or handouts I now have a great job, two small business' (FMA and Born-Free)with friends, a house, a beautiful girlfriend, am surrounded by people i love and that inspire me in many ways, and i have things i am proud of building with my bare hands. I do wish my immediate family was closer distance wise, but we do what we can and i couldn't be more proud to be a part their family.

I am also fortunate to not have had too many calls such as this in quite some time and although i am thankful for every single day i have, i couldn't be more sad and grateful today.

To the Kenny family, my heart goes out to you.

Not really sure what the message is here besides life is indeed short even for those that live a long time. If you aren't happy with yours, change it before too long. Nothing comes without work and nothing is a substitute for those close to you.

One Five Zero

At the end of 2010, when everyone was talking about their New Year's resolutions, I said to my wife "I will ride a motorcycle more that I ever have this coming year. That is my resolution."

I think I mentioned it once to her and once to a good buddy. With Seattle's weather and my dislike of getting wet, I didn't think I had a chance of anything more than 100 days in the saddle, if that.

Well, here we are on December 6th, the 150th day I've ridden this year. What started out as a half-cocked goal somehow turned into a driving force. Sure, the majority of those rides were quick, scenic loops around a couple of local neighborhoods on my way to work, but every single one has been great! And yes, I did get wet a handful of times, but by paying just a little attention to the weather forecasts, I avoided the real frog strangling gully washers.

Just over fifty days of riding were on my little Triumph, which now lives a happy life in Japan. Just shy of 100 days of riding have been on the Husqvarna. If you like riding motorcycles more than you like looking at them, you should own a Supermoto bike. Sure, they're not as handsome as vintage bikes, but who cares? They are wolves in sheeps' clothing and they are more fun around town than you can even imagine. How I've ridden this thing nearly 100 days without losing my license, I have no idea. Every stretch of straight road - long or short - is an opportunity to ride a wheelie; every traffic signal or stop light is a reason to lock up the rear brake; and every turn without traffic, whether long and sweeping or tight and decreasing in radius, is a chance to stick a foot out and get a little loose.

Regardless of the type of bike you own, ride it as much as possible. It will make you a happier person.

Been away from the computer (and phone mostly) for over a week now. Amy and i closed on our first home, and we had to do a few things before we moved in...which turned into a week of 12+ hour days with my dad who drove down from Salt Lake with a car full of tools!

The house was built in 1928 so it needed a few things. We replumbed the whole house in Pex to replace the old galvanized pipes, put in a tankless water heater, redid a bunch of gas lines, dug a trench to the garage to add 220v, hot and cold water, and a drain so we could put the washer and dryer out there, updated the main electrical panel, knocked a wall out in the kitchen to open it up, had to replace two floor joists from years of a leaky bathtub along with some other water damage in the wall, framed and plumbed a 1/2 bath...and a few other things i'm sure...plus moved out of our old house!
Couldn't have done it without my dad, the remodeler extraordinaire! Thanks a ton! My brother even came up on sunday to lay down some wiring and additional outlets.

There's still a good amount to do to finish the kitchen and 1/2 bath, but it's better already!

When I was visiting Larry Watson in the hospital, naturally we talked about paint. In the course of our talk, Larry punched me in the brain. Before I left he asked me "so when are you going to paint the "Split Dimension"? My brain was punched so naturally I had no answer but only questions. The Leader described it as one paint-job splitting to reveal another.

OK what?

So that is what i tried to intrepret here on this tank I painted for the Oil & Water show earlier this month. The flames split two identical panel layouts that are different in their own dimesion.

I'll post up some more pics soon, this one lifted from joyrides.

The Bonehead Enduro

While digging around I ran across these pictures from a small, local event we have here in the Seattle area that's called the Bonhead Enduro. Basically, a bunch of guys hop on their pre-75 bikes and go crash around on fire roads and in the woods for 1/2 a day. The year that I rode my '52 Triumph in the enduro, it was the oldest machine there, but as you can see from the trophy plaquard, bikes have attended that are way, way older. 20's, 30's, etc. Some folks come out on choppers, some on dirt bikes, and some on whatever they have that's old. Note missing tire on fish scale tank'd Honda. The bike's owner completed the ride in the top 5 and he did it animal style, with a flat tire and flying low the whole way.

I'll try to remember to post the event flyer when it's sent out. Definitely a fun and unique event.

My Brother was in town last week and wanted to see a little live music. After peeling through the local weirdo paper and looking around online, we didn't run across much of anything worth venturing out to see. This was on Monday.

While out for a beer on Tuesday night down in old Ballard - my drink your face off maritime neighborhood - we walked past the Tractor Tavern, a local bar that features alternative country and blues acts. There staring back at us from the window flyer was something that caught my eye:

The Brother and I agreed to go check him out on Wednesday evening, and fuck man!

I've seen a thing or two, but I've never seen anything like what that man did for two hours. Dirty old delta blues, hellfire and brimstone rock and roll, tear-jerking ballads, outlaw country on coke, yodeling, and a few other types of music that I don't even know how to describe. Someone called him the white trash Robert Johnson, and that's quite simply as well as it can be said. He's the consumate story teller by way of music.

He beat the all-living bejeezuz out of that old Gibson guitar, nearly stomped a hole in the stage floor, somehow sang three parts simultaneously in a single song, laid down some Muddy Waters that was so ass-shakin' the floor almost broke free of its nails from the whole bar dancing, and left everything you could leave on that stage.

After a bit of reading, I understand why Biram can do what he does. The man plays nearly 250 shows per year, and that unto itself - completely outside of my half-cocked words - is reason enough to go see him practice his art.

Rum and Nortons

My wife and I went to check out The Rum Diaries this past weekend. Great and funny movie, and I highly recommend it.

In typical November fashion in Seattle, it was raining like a cow pissing on a flat rock, so the last thing I expected to see when we pulled into the parking garage was the bike you see here.

We parked a few stories below where the bike was and I didn't even need to tell my wife where I was off to 'for just a minute'. We got out of the car and she just said "I'll meet you upstairs, be quick."

If I could see one random vintage motorcycle in an even more random place each week for the rest of my days I would smile one more time per week than I already do, which is an awful lot to start with.

Thank you to those who served in our Military. The gentleman you see in the picture above, Anthony Sallazzo, is my Grandfather. He fought at Iwo Jima, and of the approximately 150 soldiers in his platoon, was one of six to make it out alive.

Thank you for the freedom I have today Grandpa. I do not take it for granted.

I broke out the old veiling gun for my piece in the show. James from UVT took this cool shot the other night. Larry Watson gave me this idea a long time ago to shoot the veiling onto glass. The Leader always had the best ideas.

Mike's Pan

My friend Mike's Pan in a Knuckle frame. Great bike that's owned by a great guy. Simple, clean, and built with some pretty neat parts. The sissy bar on the machine is made of square rebar. When was the last time you saw square rebar? Me? Never.

I shot the picture in a wide-open field at a neat farm out in Snoqualmie, WA. The mountain in the back is Mt. Si. In addition to being pretty damn impressive visually, it's also a fun place to go climbing and trail running.

Spent the day getting Ron Burgundy back together...just pulled it off the lift, backed it out of the shop to let it warm up...i think i hurt it. The #3 cylinder was the worst from the head gasket let-go and the car sat for a little bit until i could get back to it...there was some funkiness on the cylinder wall that i just figured i'd see what happens...smokes a little out that side now...D'oh! maybe it will go away.........that and i suspect the O2 sensor is toast after going to antifreeze raging waters. Oh well, two day until Irwindale, if i can just make one good pass and get kicked out for being too fast without a cage!!
